Is It Normal for My Oven to Smell?
Some oven smells are normal โ particularly with new ovens or after the first use following cleaning. Others are warning signs that need immediate attention. Here's how to tell the difference.
New Oven Smell (Burning Plastic or Chemical Smell)
A burning or chemical smell from a new oven is almost always normal and comes from the factory protective coating burning off. Most manufacturers recommend running the oven empty at 400ยฐF for 30โ60 minutes before first use โ with windows open and the range hood running. This "burn-in" process clears the smell. If the smell persists after several uses, contact the manufacturer.
Gas Oven Smells Like Gas
A faint gas smell when first igniting is normal โ a brief whiff as the gas ignites. This should dissipate in seconds. A persistent gas smell or a strong rotten egg odor is a serious safety issue. If you smell gas and can't immediately identify it as the ignition process:
- Turn off the oven immediately
- Don't use any electrical switches
- Open windows and doors
- Leave the house
- Call your gas company's emergency line from outside
Electric Oven Smells Like Gas
This is almost always a burning electrical component โ insulation, wiring, or a heating element โ rather than actual gas. It can smell sulfurous. Turn off the oven and call a technician.
Oven Smells Like Burning When Turned On
Common causes: food debris on the oven floor or heating element, a worn door seal that allows grease to drip onto elements, or a failing heating element that's arcing. Clean the oven thoroughly and inspect the heating element for visible damage (blistering, holes, dark spots).
Oven Smells Like Urine or Ammonia
This unusual smell usually means mice have nested in your oven insulation โ a surprisingly common problem. Mouse urine and droppings on or near heating elements create this distinctive smell. This requires professional cleaning and pest control intervention. Don't use the oven until it's been thoroughly cleaned.
Oven Smells Like Chemicals
Usually from the self-cleaning cycle (which reaches very high temperatures and burns off residue) or from cleaning products that weren't fully rinsed. Air out thoroughly after self-cleaning.
