Why Does My Dryer Smell Like Burning?
A burning smell from your dryer is never something to ignore. It could be a minor issue like lint buildup or something more serious like an overheating motor. Here are the seven most common causes and what to do about each.
1. Lint Buildup in the Vent or Filter
The most common cause. Lint that accumulates in the exhaust vent restricts airflow, causing the dryer to overheat. The excess heat scorches lint particles, creating a distinct burning smell. Fix: Clean your lint filter after every load, and have your dryer vent professionally cleaned at least once a year.
2. Burning Lint Inside the Drum
Lint can accumulate inside the dryer housing, around the heating element, and on internal components. When heat reaches this lint, it smolders. Fix: Have a technician disassemble and clean the interior of the machine.
3. Overheating Heating Element
A faulty heating element can short-circuit and burn continuously even when not needed, causing extreme heat and a burning smell. Fix: Heating element replacement — a professional repair job.
4. Worn or Broken Dryer Belt
The drum belt can wear down and start rubbing against other components, creating friction heat and a burning rubber smell. You may also hear squealing or thumping. Fix: Replace the drum belt.
5. Worn Drum Felt Seal
The felt seal around the drum prevents heat loss. When it wears out, clothes can contact heated metal surfaces, scorching fabric and creating a burning smell. Fix: Replace the drum seal.
6. Faulty Idler Pulley or Drum Rollers
These components support and guide the drum. When they wear out, they create friction and heat. You'll usually hear a grinding or squealing noise alongside the burning smell.
7. Failed Drive Motor
A failing motor can overheat and produce a distinct burning electrical smell. The dryer may start and then stop, or it may not start at all.
My Dryer Keeps Stopping — What's Wrong?
A dryer that starts and then stops is usually caused by overheating. The thermal fuse — a safety device — trips to prevent fire. Check for a clogged vent first. If the vent is clear, the thermal fuse itself may have blown and needs replacement.
Clothes Smell Burnt After Drying
If your clothes come out smelling burnt but the dryer itself seems fine, check the heating element isn't running too hot, the vent isn't blocked, and the lint trap is clean. Synthetic fabrics are especially susceptible to heat damage.
