Why Oven Symbols Can Be Confusing
Modern ovens have more settings than ever โ but the icons on the dial or display aren't always obvious. This guide explains every common oven symbol, what it does, and when to use it. For brand-specific variations, see our oven symbols by brand guide. For a deep-dive into all symbols including electric and fan ovens, see our full oven symbols reference.
The Most Common Oven Symbols Explained
๐ด Top + Bottom Lines โ Conventional Bake
Two horizontal lines โ one at the top, one at the bottom of the symbol. This is the standard conventional bake setting. Heat comes from both the top and bottom elements simultaneously, without a fan. Best for: single-rack baking, cakes, casseroles, and dishes that need even top and bottom heat.
๐ด Fan Symbol (Fan Inside a Circle) โ Fan-Assisted Oven
A fan icon inside a circle. The fan circulates hot air from the conventional elements throughout the oven cavity. This reduces cooking time by about 20% compared to conventional baking. Best for: most everyday cooking, roasting, multi-rack cooking.
๐ด Fan with Ring Element โ True Convection / Fan Oven
A fan icon surrounded by a circular element. This is true convection โ a dedicated heating element encircles the fan, producing perfectly even heat throughout the oven. Best for: baking multiple trays simultaneously, pastries, bread, even browning.
๐ด Top Zigzag Line โ Grill / Broil
A zigzag or wavy line at the top of the symbol. The top grill element activates at high intensity. Best for: toasting, browning cheese, cooking steaks and chops, grilling vegetables.
๐ด Half Zigzag โ Half Grill
Only half the zigzag is illuminated or drawn. Only the centre portion of the grill element activates โ more energy efficient for smaller items. Best for: toasting a small tray of food, melting cheese on a single dish.
๐ด Zigzag + Fan โ Fan Grill / Turbo Grill
Grill element with a fan. The fan distributes the grill heat evenly, reducing hot spots and cooking food more thoroughly. Great for: chicken pieces, sausages, whole fish โ anything that benefits from surrounding heat with browning on top.
๐ด Bottom Line Only โ Base Heat
A single horizontal line at the bottom. Only the bottom element activates. Best for: crisping pastry bases, finishing the bottom of pizzas, and slow cooking dishes where you don't want top browning.
๐ด Fan + Bottom Line โ Intensive Bake / Pizza Mode
Fan icon with a bottom line. Combines the bottom element with the fan for intense base heat. Best for: pizza, quiche, pies โ anything needing a crispy, thoroughly cooked base.
๐ด Snowflake / Fan โ Defrost
A snowflake icon, sometimes with a fan. The fan circulates room-temperature air (no heating element) to gently defrost food. Best for: defrosting frozen items without partially cooking them.
๐ด Thermometer or Probe โ Temperature Probe
Found on premium ovens with a meat probe connection. The oven cooks until the internal temperature of the food reaches the target you set. Perfect for precise roasting of meat.
๐ด Clock / Timer Icon โ Timed Cooking
Sets the oven to switch on and off automatically at preset times. Great for preparing meals in advance.
๐ด Light Bulb โ Oven Light Only
Activates the oven light without any heat. Use to check on food without opening the door.
