๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Why Is My New Dishwasher Wet Inside After a Cycle?

Brand new dishwasher still wet inside after the cycle ends? This is normal for most dishwashers. Here's why and what you can do about it.

Is It Normal for a New Dishwasher to Be Wet Inside?

Yes โ€” for most dishwashers, especially those with plastic tub interiors, some residual moisture inside the dishwasher after a cycle is completely normal. This surprises many new dishwasher owners who expect their machine to deliver bone-dry dishes.

Why Dishwashers Don't Always Fully Dry

Understanding how your dishwasher dries dishes helps set the right expectations:

Condensation Drying (Most Common in Energy-Efficient Models)

Many modern dishwashers โ€” especially European brands like Bosch, Miele, and Siemens โ€” use condensation drying rather than a heated element. At the end of the wash cycle, the stainless steel tub cools faster than the dishes. Moisture evaporates off the hot dishes and condenses on the cooler tub walls, then drains away. This method is very energy efficient but leaves some moisture inside the tub.

Plastic Tubs Don't Dry as Well as Stainless Steel

Plastic tubs retain heat and don't create the temperature differential needed for condensation drying. If your dishwasher has a plastic interior, it's more likely to have residual moisture after a cycle.

Plasticware is Always the Problem

Plastic items (bowls, containers, lids) don't retain heat the way glass and ceramic do, so water pools on their concave surfaces rather than evaporating. This is true of every dishwasher โ€” it's a physics issue, not a fault.

How to Improve Dishwasher Drying

  • Use rinse aid โ€” Rinse aid is the single biggest improvement you can make. It breaks the surface tension of water so it sheets off dishes rather than forming droplets. Fill the rinse aid dispenser and keep it topped up.
  • Select the heated dry option โ€” Many dishwashers have an optional heated dry or extra-dry setting. Enable it for best results.
  • Open the door slightly at the end of the cycle โ€” Letting steam escape immediately after the cycle ends dramatically improves drying. Some dishwashers (Bosch, Miele) do this automatically.
  • Load correctly โ€” Angle bowls and containers so water can run off rather than pool.
  • Run dishwasher at night โ€” Leaving dishes in the machine overnight after a completed cycle often results in drier dishes by morning.

When Should You Worry?

A wet tub interior is normal. However, you should call a technician if:

  • There is standing water on the tub floor after the cycle (not just moisture) โ€” this indicates a drain problem. See our dishwasher not draining guide.
  • Dishes are wet AND cold โ€” the heating element may have failed
  • The rinse aid dispenser isn't opening during the cycle
