Bosch Dishwasher Won't Drain โ What's Happening?
A Bosch dishwasher that won't drain properly leaves standing water in the bottom of the tub โ a frustrating but usually fixable problem. Here are six fixes to try before calling a technician.
Fix 1: Clean the Filter
Bosch dishwashers have a triple filter system at the bottom of the tub. This is the first thing to check. Remove the lower rack, turn the cylindrical filter counter-clockwise and lift out. Remove the flat filter beneath it. Rinse both under running water and scrub gently with a soft brush. Reinstall and test.
Fix 2: Run a Force Drain Cycle
Bosch dishwashers can often be force-drained by pressing and holding the "Start" button for 3โ5 seconds until the drain pump activates. On some models, pressing Cancel + Drain simultaneously achieves the same result. Check your model's manual for the specific procedure.
Fix 3: Check the Drain Hose
Inspect the drain hose (under the sink, connecting the dishwasher to the garbage disposal or drain) for kinks or blockages. Also check that the hose has a proper high loop or air gap connection โ without this, water can siphon back into the machine.
Fix 4: Check the Garbage Disposal
If you recently installed a new garbage disposal, ensure the knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet has been removed. If your disposal is clogged, it will also prevent the dishwasher from draining.
Fix 5: Check the Air Gap
If you have a dishwasher air gap on your sink, remove the cap and clean out any debris. A blocked air gap restricts drainage.
Fix 6: Inspect the Drain Pump
With the filter removed, look into the drain pump opening for any debris (broken glass, bone chips, etc.) that may be blocking the impeller. Use pliers to remove any obstructions โ never use your hand. If the pump is clear but still not working, the pump motor may have failed and requires replacement.
Bosch Dishwasher Keeps Draining / Continuously Draining
If your Bosch dishwasher drains continuously during a cycle, this usually indicates a faulty water inlet valve (allowing water to constantly enter) or a control board issue that's misreading water level sensor data.
