Signs of a Bad Dryer Motor
Before testing the motor, look for these warning signs:
- Dryer starts briefly then stops (motor overheating and tripping the thermal overload)
- Humming noise when you start the dryer but drum doesn't spin
- Burning electrical smell (motor windings overheating)
- Drum turns slowly or inconsistently
- Dryer won't start at all despite power being confirmed
How to Test a Dryer Motor with a Multimeter
Safety first: Unplug the dryer before beginning any testing or disassembly.
Step 1 โ Access the Motor
Disassemble the dryer to reach the motor. This typically involves removing the front panel (or rear panel on some models), the drum, and the belt. Consult your model's service manual for the specific procedure.
Step 2 โ Disconnect Motor Wiring
Take a photo of the wiring connections before disconnecting anything. Label each wire if needed.
Step 3 โ Test for Continuity
Set your multimeter to the continuity/resistance (ฮฉ) setting. Place the probes on the motor's run winding terminals. A working motor should show a resistance reading of 1โ10 ohms. An open circuit (OL or infinity) means the winding has failed.
Step 4 โ Test the Start Winding
Test across the start winding terminals separately. Again, you should see a low resistance reading. No continuity = failed winding.
Step 5 โ Check for Ground Fault
Test between each terminal and the motor housing. You should see no continuity (OL). If you get a reading, the motor has a ground fault and must be replaced.
Dryer Motor Replacement Cost in Atlanta
Dryer motor replacement typically costs $175โ$350 in Atlanta, including parts and labor. Given that a new dryer costs $500โ$1,200, motor replacement is usually worth doing on machines less than 8 years old.
