What Is a Dishwasher Air Gap?
A dishwasher air gap is a small fitting โ usually installed on your countertop or sink โ that prevents dirty water from the drain from siphoning back into your clean dishwasher. It's a physical gap in the drain line that creates a break, making backflow physically impossible.
How Does a Dishwasher Air Gap Work?
The dishwasher drain hose connects to the air gap's inlet. Wastewater travels up and out through the air gap's top vent, then back down through a second hose into the garbage disposal or drain. If there's negative pressure in the drain, the air gap prevents it from pulling water back into the dishwasher.
Do You Need a Dishwasher Air Gap?
Requirements vary by location. Many states and local building codes in Georgia require air gaps on all new dishwasher installations. Even where not required, an air gap is the most reliable way to prevent drain backflow โ more reliable than a high-drain loop alternative.
Where Is the Air Gap on a Dishwasher?
The air gap fitting is on your sink or countertop โ it looks like a small chrome or plastic cap near your faucet. The actual air gap mechanism is inside this cap. The hoses connecting to it are under the sink.
How to Install a Dishwasher Air Gap
Step 1: Turn off power to the dishwasher at the breaker.
Step 2: Find the pre-drilled knockout hole on your sink (near the faucet) or drill one if needed.
Step 3: Insert the air gap body up through the hole and secure with the mounting nut underneath.
Step 4: Connect the small hose (from the dishwasher drain) to the smaller inlet of the air gap. Connect the larger hose from the air gap outlet to the garbage disposal or drain.
Step 5: Snap the decorative cap onto the air gap body. Restore power and run the dishwasher to test.
Dishwasher Air Gap Replacement
If your air gap is leaking or clogged, it's usually easier to replace the entire unit than to repair it. Air gaps typically cost $10โ$25. Replacement takes about 20 minutes with basic tools.
Under-Sink Dishwasher Air Gap: What It Looks Like
The air gap fitting itself mounts on the sink deck or countertop, but all the connections happen under the sink. Here's how the plumbing is arranged:
- Dishwasher drain hose runs from the back of the dishwasher up to the air gap inlet (the smaller barb/port on the bottom of the air gap body).
- Air gap outlet hose (larger diameter) runs from the second port on the air gap down and connects to either the garbage disposal inlet or the drain tailpiece.
- The air gap cap on the countertop sits above these connections โ it's purely cosmetic and can be removed for cleaning or inspection.
The key principle: water flows up into the air gap, then down into the drain. This physical height difference is what prevents backflow โ dirty drain water can never siphon back up into the dishwasher because it would have to flow uphill.
How a Dishwasher Air Gap Connects to a Garbage Disposal
If you have a garbage disposal, the dishwasher drain and air gap typically connect to it as follows:
- The air gap outlet hose connects to the side inlet port on the garbage disposal housing (a barbed fitting covered by a knockout plug that must be removed during disposal installation).
- When the garbage disposal is running, it helps process any food debris that comes through the dishwasher drain.
- If you don't have a disposal, the air gap outlet hose connects to a wye or tee fitting on the sink drain tailpiece (the pipe below the sink drain).
Important: If your garbage disposal was recently replaced and your dishwasher stopped draining, check that the knockout plug inside the disposal's dishwasher inlet was removed during installation. A forgotten knockout plug is a very common cause of dishwasher drain failures after disposal replacements.
Dishwasher Not Draining โ Could Be the Air Gap
If your dishwasher isn't draining, check the air gap first. Remove the cap and clear any debris that may be blocking the internal chamber. This is a common and easy-to-fix cause of drain issues.
