Why Won't My Washer Drain?
Opening your washing machine to find clothes sitting in standing water is a frustrating experience. A washer that won't drain is one of the most common appliance complaints we receive at FixRight Atlanta. The good news: the cause is usually diagnosable and fixable.
Common Causes of a Washer Not Draining
1. Clogged Drain Hose
The drain hose carries water from the washer to your home's drain. If it's kinked, clogged with lint or debris, or pushed too far into the standpipe, water won't drain properly. Inspect the hose for obstructions and make sure it's not pushed more than 6 inches into the drain pipe.
2. Blocked Pump Filter (Front-Loaders)
Most front-loading washers have a pump filter (usually behind a small panel at the bottom front). This filter catches coins, buttons, and other small items. A blocked filter will stop the pump from draining water. Check and clean this filter every few months.
3. Faulty Drain Pump
If the drain pump motor fails, your washer simply cannot drain. You may hear a humming sound when the washer attempts to drain β that's the motor trying to spin but failing. Pump replacement is typically a $150β$250 repair.
4. Lid Switch or Door Latch Issue
On top-loading washers, the lid switch tells the machine that the lid is closed and it's safe to spin and drain. If the switch fails, the washer won't advance to the drain cycle. Similarly, a faulty door latch on front-loaders can cause the same issue.
5. Control Board Failure
If the electronic control board sends incorrect signals, the washer may get "stuck" in a cycle and refuse to drain. Error codes on the display panel are your first clue that an electronic issue is involved.
π‘ Quick Check: Before calling a technician, check the drain hose for kinks and clean the pump filter if you have a front-loader. These two steps resolve about 30% of no-drain complaints.
